Your most important resource will always be your employees. So each staffing decision, no matter how seemingly small or insignificant, can be critical! Hiring the right person / fit can drastically improve both the work environment and performance / output. Likewise, the wrong person / fit can cause irreparable damage!
Before recruiting / staffing can begin, the following critical items must be clarified:
- Organization (Org.) Chart – The first step is to create an “org” chart that outlines each job needed to effectively operate. The org chart should include clear / detailed job descriptions.
- Significant Indicators – Next, it’s important to look for signs of inefficiency, lack of productivity, and/or a decrease in work quality that may be caused by inadequate staffing (i.e., frequent service failures, customer complaints, employee burnout, excessive overtime, falling behind on orders, etc.).
- Statistical Data – Then, review the statistical data tied to your industry. To best estimate when hiring is appropriate, divide your average number of employees (annually) by your annual revenue, then divide by 12 months. This will give you a revenue amount that would suggest when it’s appropriate to consider hiring another employee.
- Technology Solutions – It’s also important to consider any new technology / automations that can lead to long-term efficiencies and cost savings. New technologies may require you to revise statistical data, which will allow you to hire new employees at a decelerated rate.
- Other Critical Factors – Lastly, it’s critical to consider other factors, such as whether the job will be short-term and/or project-based. In such situations, it may be better to outsource work to consultant firms specializing in the work. Quickly laying off an employee may negatively impact your reputation. Further, new employee training can often prove to be time-consuming and expensive.
- Support and Accountability – Note: Once a new employee (or outside consulting firm) is hired, it’s important to follow up regularly and often to offer / provide needed support and to “inspect the expectations” outlined when hired.
The job market is extremely competitive, so it’s critical that your talent search is both professional and thorough. Biznis Resource will help you recruit and hire the right person / fit for your business, non-profit / organization, or school!
